Reformed Apologetics with Ligonier Ministries

Although the late Robert Charles Sproul Sr. had gone home to be with the LORD, Ligonier Ministries should (and still) remain as one of the most valuable sources of Christian apologetics. He is a Presbyterian preacher and founder of the said ministries. Ligonier has several apologists that still continue his job such as Steven Lawson, Stephen Nichols, and W. Robert Godfrey to name a few. Sproul also had a long friendship with Reformed Baptist pastor, John F. MacArthur, of Grace to You.

MacArthur has been good for sermons and scriptural expositions. However, I feel that Sproul has been better when it came to the explanation of necessary facts and figures such as church history, church periods, and the like along with his colleagues. Sproul manages to talk about several periods in church history to discuss the growth of the Church. This radio program is called “Renewing Your Mind” along with the daily video. Right now, a lot of Sproul’s old videos and audios are accessible since not everyone had a chance to hear them while he lived.

Sproul has also been the author of several books. One good book for apologetics is Defending the Faith – a guideline to the basic facts. On the other hand, you may want to get the book called Now That’s a Good Question in regards to common Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the Christian faith. It would also be good to get the book The Holiness of God as a powerful study of God’s holiness as well as Chosen by God to further understand the doctrine of election.

Maybe, one can’t forget the collaboration that he had with John F. MacArthur and the late D. James Kennedy, author of the book Why I Believe which I have the first edition. The collaboration also talked about whether or not Roman Catholics and Protestants (which I love to term as born-again believers) can really agree on doctrines. The whole explanation between the crucial differences would be a good way to refute the Evangelicals and Catholics Together movement and a witnessing tool to Roman Catholics without going in the same way as Chick Publications and Jesus-is-Savior – both equally misguided ministries. Sproul didn’t shy away from criticizing Catholicism but didn’t resolve to dirty tactics either. Instead, he chose a very scholarly approach.

It would still be recommended to have books by Sproul into the library. Even some moderate fundamentalists could still enjoy his writings even when they still disagree with Calvinism or still stick to KJV Only.
