How 2 Timothy 2:5 is Rendered in the KJV in Contrast to Some Modern Translations

I used to be in the KJV Only camp. There are times I still feel the urge to read from my leatherbound KJV or the KJV with Strong’s Concordance in the Tecarta application. I decided to do a comparison of the rendition of the KJV and some modern translations. The KJV renders 2 Timothy 2:5 as:

And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.

Murdering Christians in God’s Name

John 16:2 says, “They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.” What follows next is verse 3 saying, “And they will do these things because they have not known the Father nor Me.” This is definitely breaking two commandments. Not murdering people and not taking the Name of the LORD in vain. The disciples were warned that the time will come when they will be persecuted in the name of God. After that very moment, you can read in the Book of Acts when the Pharisees became no better than the blatantly wicked pagan Romans. The Romans persecuted the Christians in the name of their pagan gods. Nero (nor any Roman emperor before or after him either) never persecuted Christians in the name of God but in the name of their pagan gods. Domitian never exiled John the Beloved to Patmos in the name of God. The Pharisees persecuted Christians in the name of God.

For the Flesh Goes Against the Spirit and the Spirit Against the Flesh

While doing the daily Charles H. Spurgeon devotional, I decided to revisit one of the older entries for June. June 2’s morning devotional talks about the Spirit and the flesh. The believer has the real problem of being saved from their sinful nature and is now getting saved from sin. True, a criminal who gets saved by grace may abandon the criminal lifestyle. However, sin is far from dead. There are still many sins to deal with such as the “minor sins”. A man may stop philandering after salvation but the lustful thoughts are still there. The body is still wrecked in sin in the sense that even if it abandons a sinful lifestyle, it’s still going to sin. The thought life is a very difficult battlefield since these sins are so small–it’s hard to find them! Sure, a person may avoid physical acts of sexual immorality but sinister thoughts of doing them can invade the mind, therefore causing sin to happen!

Graciously Not Majoring the Minors About KJV Only vs. Non-KJV Only

Photo by Ella Wei on Pexels.com

I started reading the NIV, got into KJV Only after hearing the arguments of an extreme KJV Only pastor, became a moderate KJV Only (though I was still hypocritically reading comics from Chick Publications and Jesus-is-Savior, both nutjobs), and was pretty much like David W. Cloud. I had a stand for some time that I could embrace a non-KJV Only as a brother or sister if the person showed signs of being truly saved. On the other hand, I still believe that the KJV is the only trustworthy English Bible today while the others today are liberal translations.

Restoring Christian Brethren Who Backslid into Laziness

Whether Christians like to admit it or not, they possess a nature that loves sin and that hates sin. It’s a contradictory battle from within. That’s why no Christian can truly love sin because the new nature hates sin as much as the old nature loves it. 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13 talks about the Christians in Thessalonica who backslid into laziness. It became a real problem when some Christians ceased to work and became freeloaders. Freeloaders aren’t good for the Church. It’s one thing if one can’t work due to old age or sickness. It’s another thing when one can work and not work. I remembered seeing some delivery men missing a leg. Why aren’t some people with no physical disability not working?

The Incestuous Herods as the Habsburgs of Roman-Occupied Israel

If royal incest is mentioned in biology, the ones often mentioned are the Habsburgs. We study biology to further understand the Bible. A study of biology may also tell us why the House of Herod fell apart. A study of history (such as the writings of Josephus the Jew) and Mendelian genetics would tell us something was pretty wrong with the Herods. Just reading about the parentage of Roman politicians, the Greeks, and the Herods is disgusting. I even couldn’t swallow royal inbreeding in mythologies. Now, we’re taking royal inbreeding in history. The Herods were definitely the Habsburgs of Israel.

I Have No Reason to Believe Drunkard “Believers” Are Really Saved

One of the reasons why I’ve abandoned supporting the Jack Hyles movement is because of the wishy-washy stance on sanctification. I decided to reread some pages of Jesus-is-Savior by that pervert David J. Stewart. This video by Ray Comfort of Living Waters confronting someone showing signs of being a false convert. Before you falsely accuse Comfort of teaching conditional security–he doesn’t! Go ahead and try watching True and False Conversion as well as Hell’s Best Kept Secret. Notice that Comfort is confronting this false convert who says he trusts in Jesus but has no real desire for good works, it’s highly doubtful. Matthew 7:14-20 warns that by their fruits you will know people. I even wonder if this drunk guy was a result of the Hyles-Anderson College.
